Starting a thread to post answers to frequently-asked questions about the Rows Garden app...

1. How do I load puzzles from my favorite subscription service into the Rows Garden app on iOS?

Aries Puzzles
• Tap on the RGZ email attachment to bring up the share sheet.
• Tap on the Rows Garden icon to send the puzzle to the app.

Outside the Box Puzzles
• Tap on the RGZ link in the email, which will send you to Safari to download the file.
• In Safari, after downloading, tap on the downloads button (down-arrow in a circle) to bring up a list of downloaded files.
• Tap on the downloaded file to send it to the Rows Garden app.

Garden Party Crosswords:
• Tap on the RGZ link in the email, which will send you to Safari to download the file.
• In Safari, after downloading, tap on the downloads button (down-arrow in a circle) to bring up a list of downloaded files.
• Tap on the downloaded file, which will take you to the Downloads folder in the Files app.
• Tap on the downloaded file in the Downloads folder to send it to the Rows Garden app.

Sorry for the extra hoops required for the latter two puzzles; the flow used to be more streamlined before iOS 13, but Apple made some changes that introduced the extra step(s).

If Safari is not your default browser, the steps should be similar but might not be exactly the same; if you can't get it working, let me know and I'll help you sort it out and update the FAQ accordingly.

Thanks,
Robert

Hi all,

I've recently pushed out a new Rows Garden app update (1.5.2 for iOS, 1.2.3 for Android/Kindle) that introduces support for non-standard puzzle sizes.

The update includes four new samples: two bite-sized mini-puzzles by me (my first attempts at construction) and two medium-sized "midi-puzzles" by Michael Blake of Garden Party Crosswords.

If you already have the app installed, you won't get the new samples -- they're only deployed when you do a new installation of the app. If you're interested in trying them out, you can download them from the following locations:

Bosco's Window Box 1 & 2
Garden Party Year 3 Midi 1 & 2

Hope you enjoy them!

Thanks,
Robert

Update: I've added puzzle reset support in the latest version of the app, which went live in all three app stores today.  Swipe the puzzle in the puzzle list and then tap the blue reset button to clear all inputs and restore the puzzle to its original state.

Thanks again for the suggestion!

Hi Deb,

There's currently no way to fully reset a puzzle, no. You can use the answer menu to reset the garden (tap the light-bulb icon and then choose Clear > Puzzle), but it won't reset the bloom clues -- any notes you added or clues that you marked as placed will be left unchanged. On iOS, that option isn't available for solved puzzles (an oversight on my part, one that I've fixed on Android but not yet on iOS), so you'll need to manually delete a letter from the garden to re-enable the Clear option.

Adding a proper reset option is a great suggestion, and I'll look to add it in the next release of the app. Thanks for the feedback!

Interesting; I haven't run into that issue, and I usually solve on the iPad. What happens when you tap the link in Joon's email -- can you post a screenshot of what you get in Safari?

If you're getting to the RGZ file but Safari isn't showing the 'Open in "Rows Garden"' link, what happens if you tap the Share button (not sure if that's what it's called -- it's the box-with-an-arrow button on the toolbar) -- does it give you the option to open in Rows Garden there?

Thanks,
Robert

Glad to hear you’re enjoying the app, Rick!

Joon is planning to start providing puzzles in an app-friendly format alongside the PDFs that he sends out as part of the subscription. Once he’s got that up and running, you should be able to just tap on the file or link in the email in order to open it in the app. Stay tuned...

Thanks,
Robert
